These first models I've done for the project have been very important to me as it helped me start to understand the general art style and restrictions our game is going for. These assets are fairly simple in nature, starting off from a basic cylinder which I extended upwards and then overlaid on the concept art done by Harrison which was very helpful for getting the general shape.
For the heads of each of these I created a separate mesh from one of the simples and then edited that to make sure it had the right feel and proportions to it. For the spear head it was quite finicky to get the right shape and to also made sure it looked like a natural stone all the way around, meaning I had to make sure that from all points of view that it wasn’t too straight and simple and actually looked like something someone would have fashioned into a spear head.
Throughout this process I made sure to ask Harrison and Abbie both how they would want this asset and if any changes were in their minds needed as it would be one of them 2 Unwrapping and Texturing these assets, as was agreed upon by the group. Because of this there were some small tweaks that needed to be made about the assets including making the shafts of the torches and spear more irregular so it wasn't just a cylinder going up. The main thing I tried with these assets was modelling without caring about the poly count too much at the start and then gradually lowering them to a level the group was happy with. Although this seems like a slower process for creating low poly assets in these starting assets I believe it’s been vital to do as its helped me realise how low poly the group wants the assets for our game which means I need to be a lot more intentful about my poly usage.
